300 Gallon and 500 Gallon Fire Skid Units: Sizing, Agents and Applications

A 300 gallon fire skid delivers about five minutes of foam solution through a 60 gpm handline, and a 500 gallon skid about eight and a half minutes. Push the same tanks through a 95 gpm nozzle and the figures drop to roughly three and five minutes. Those two numbers, tank volume and nozzle flow, fix everything else about a gallon-rated skid, and the choice between 300 and 500 gallons comes down to how many square feet of burning liquid you need to cover and for how long.

What a Gallon Rating Actually Describes

Skids are rated in gallons when the agent is a liquid: premixed foam solution, water with a concentrate tank alongside, or plain water on a small Class A unit. A dry chemical skid is rated in pounds of powder because the agent is a solid. The two scales do not convert directly, and a specification that asks for a "500 gallon dry chemical skid" is mixing units; what is usually meant is a skid of roughly equivalent fire capacity.

On a premix foam skid the 300 or 500 gallon figure is the volume of finished solution in the tank, ready to discharge, typically expelled by nitrogen from separate cylinders in exactly the way a dry chemical skid is expelled. On a proportioning skid the same figure may refer to a water tank that is mixed with concentrate at the eductor on the way out, in which case the concentrate tank, usually 15 to 30 gallons for a 3 percent foam, is a separate line item. Confirm which the supplier is quoting: the first needs nothing from the site, the second needs a pump or a hydrant.

Discharge Time at Typical Nozzle Flows

Handline foam nozzles on skids and trailers are usually rated at 60, 95 or 125 gpm at 100 psi. The table gives discharge time for the two common tank sizes, with no allowance for solution left in the tank and hose, which on a nitrogen-expelled unit is small.

Those durations are the budget, and the fire sets the spending rate. For a nondiked spill attacked with portable nozzles or monitors, NFPA 11 sets the minimum application rate by concentrate: 0.10 gpm per square foot for AFFF and the other film-forming foams, and 0.16 for protein, fluoroprotein and the synthetic fluorine-free products replacing them, with a 15 minute minimum discharge in either case. Since new units are being filled with fluorine-free concentrate, 0.16 is the floor to plan against, and the product listing often puts it higher still.

At 0.16 gpm per square foot a 60 gpm nozzle covers 375 square feet, and a 95 gpm nozzle covers about 590. A 300 gallon tank therefore secures a spill of a few hundred square feet for five minutes, long enough to extinguish it and hold the blanket while a valve is closed, and nowhere near long enough to hold it through a half-hour isolation sequence. The 500 gallon unit buys three more minutes, or the same five minutes on a larger area at a higher flow.

Fluorine-free concentrates can require higher application rates than older AFFF formulations. Comparative fire testing has shown higher rates for some fuels, with gasoline and ethanol blends presenting demanding cases. Polar solvents need an alcohol-resistant foam at a rate the product listing sets rather than simply relying on the general floor in the standard. On a methanol storage area, the concentrate therefore needs to be an alcohol-resistant grade appropriate to the application.

The Dry Chemical Equivalent

Dry chemical is not sized by area coverage in the same way, because the powder does not form a blanket. It is sized by flow rate and discharge time against the fire it has to knock down. A hand line on a dry chemical skid runs at roughly 5 to 10 lb per second and a monitor or twin reels in the low teens, and Purple K at those rates can rapidly knock down a hydrocarbon fire, provided the fuel surface is not hot enough to cause reflash.

That flow rate is why the two scales do not line up. A 1,000 lb Purple K skid can empty in a few minutes, while a 2,000 lb unit provides additional agent capacity. Powder is primarily used for rapid knockdown, while foam provides longer-term surface control on pool fires. The powder performs well on pressurized leaks, running fuel fires and energized equipment, while foam is better suited to securing a large liquid surface after initial knockdown.

Facilities with both exposures may therefore use a twin-agent configuration combining dry chemical with foam. Salus Global builds the dry chemical side in 350, 1,000 and 2,000 lb capacities.

Agents That Belong in a 300 or 500 Gallon Tank

Premixed foam solution is a common fill on a nitrogen-expelled skid because it removes the proportioner and site water supply from the discharge equation. Premix is made at the final concentration, normally 3 percent or 6 percent by volume for hydrocarbon foam applications, with storage life determined by the concentrate manufacturer and influenced by water quality, tank lining and temperature.

A tank of premix is also a tank of water, so freezing can be an issue. A skid that will operate outdoors in cold climates needs appropriate freeze protection, a heated enclosure or an agent specifically approved for the expected temperatures.

Concentrate plus water is another option where a reliable water supply is available. A 30 gallon concentrate tank at 3 percent can produce approximately 1,000 gallons of finished solution, but the pump or hydrant must maintain the required flow and pressure, and the proportioning equipment must be correctly matched to the concentrate and nozzle.

Plain water in a 300 gallon tank with a pump is suitable for Class A applications such as trash, brush and structures, but it is not a substitute for an appropriate extinguishing system on a flammable-liquid hazard.

Where Each Size Is the Usual Order

The 300 gallon skid is a practical size for a single contained hazard such as a truck loading bay, pump pad inside a small bund, fuel island, generator yard or drilling-site fuel store. It can also serve as the foam component of a twin-agent package, where dry chemical provides rapid knockdown and foam secures the liquid surface afterward.

The 500 gallon skid is more appropriate for larger racks, dike areas around smaller tanks, marine applications, chemical facilities or sites where the response plan requires longer agent duration. At 500 gallons the frame becomes larger and heavier, and a trailer mount may make more sense when the unit must move between hazards.

Whichever size is chosen, the skid should be positioned upwind where practical, within hose reach and outside the area expected to be affected by the fire. A skid located inside the bund it is supposed to protect may become inaccessible when it is needed most.

Trade-Offs to Write Into the Specification

Foam is generally slower to knock down a fire than dry chemical and is not intended for every pressurized leak or energized-equipment scenario. A gallon-rated foam skid on a pump row may therefore need to be paired with a dry chemical system or specified as part of a twin-agent arrangement.

Premix has a defined storage life and should be tested, maintained and replaced according to the concentrate manufacturer's requirements and applicable standards. Nitrogen expulsion provides a dependable discharge method after long periods of standby but adds cylinders that require inspection and periodic requalification.

The larger the tank, the greater the potential discharge duration, but also the greater the cost, weight, footprint and refill requirement. The correct capacity should therefore be based on the hazard, application rate, nozzle flow, required duration and response plan rather than tank volume alone.

The final selection depends on the fuel, hazard area, application rate and site response plan.
