A mobile fire suppression unit is a trailer or skid that carries its own agent and its own means of discharging it, so that a site with no hydrant, fire water main or permanent fire crew still has something larger than a wheeled extinguisher to put on a fire. Why Remote Sites Need a Unit on Wheels
Remote drilling pads, frac sites, tank batteries, compressor stations, pipeline pump stations and construction-phase terminals may be far from municipal fire protection. A fixed foam system may not be practical, while a wheeled extinguisher provides only limited agent and discharge time. A mobile fire suppression trailer bridges that gap by carrying enough agent to control a larger fire and allowing the unit to move between locations.
Foam Trailers: Water, Concentrate and the Pump
A foam trailer typically carries a water tank, concentrate tank, pump, proportioner, hose reel and foam nozzle. Some units use premixed solution instead of separate water and concentrate, eliminating the proportioner but tying the unit to a specific foam type and its storage requirements.
A 500 gallon solution tank discharging at 60 gpm provides a little over eight minutes of discharge. At an application rate of 0.10 gpm per square foot, that flow covers approximately 600 square feet; at 0.16 gpm per square foot, it covers approximately 375 square feet. The actual required application rate should be based on the applicable standard and the foam manufacturer's listing.
Foam is particularly useful for pool fires and flammable-liquid spills because it forms a blanket over the fuel surface and helps control reignition. It is less suited to pressure-fed fires, electrical equipment and other hazards where the agent needs to act directly on the flame.

Towing, Weight and Placement
Weight is an important part of mobile-unit selection. A dry chemical trailer must account for the agent charge, vessel, nitrogen cylinders and trailer frame. Foam trailers become significantly heavier when carrying water, often requiring larger tow vehicles and tandem axles.
Water-based units may arrive empty and be filled on site, while dry chemical units can arrive ready for use. Any trailer used on public roads should be configured for applicable transportation requirements, including appropriate brakes, lighting and markings.
At the site, position the unit where the operator can reach the hazard while maintaining a safe retreat path. Whenever practical, place the unit upwind of the hazard and outside the expected fire area. Hose length should be checked against the actual distance from the unit to the farthest point of the hazard.
Keeping a Mobile Unit Ready to Work
Mobile units spend much of their service life in storage, making maintenance critical. Foam trailers require attention to the engine, fuel, concentrate, water storage, pump and proportioner. Premixed solutions must be managed according to the foam manufacturer's storage and replacement requirements.
Dry chemical units require inspection of the agent condition, nitrogen pressure, hose, nozzle, actuation system and tank. The agent should be checked for moisture and caking, particularly on units exposed to vibration during transport. Trailer tires, bearings, hitch components, brakes and lights also need routine inspection.
