How Long Does Dry Chemical Last? Shelf Life, Moisture Testing and Recharge Intervals

Dry chemical agent has no chemical expiry date. Sodium bicarbonate, potassium bicarbonate and monoammonium phosphate are stable salts, and a sealed charge kept dry works the same after ten years as on the day it was filled. Moisture is what ends it. Every agent is coated with a silicone or stearate water repellent, and once humidity gets past it the powder absorbs water, cakes and stops flowing through the piping and nozzle. A caked charge is a failed system whatever its age. So the agent lasts until an examination finds it caked or damp, then it is replaced. NFPA 17 sets those checks on a fixed system and NFPA 10 on a portable; the 12 year hydrostatic test is a separate clock on the vessel, not the agent.
Why the agent fails before it ages
Milled to a controlled particle size, the agent has to flow like a liquid under nitrogen pressure from the tank through the fluidizing manifold, hose and nozzle at a rate that will beat a Class B fire. Moisture usually ends it, entering through a gauge seal, a weeping fill cap, or a cylinder opened in humid air and closed again. Temperature cycling does the same: a skid on a Gulf Coast loading rack swings through a wide daily range, and condensation forms in any vessel that breathes. Mechanical packing is the quieter failure: a stored-pressure portable that has ridden on a truck for years can hold a brick of agent at the bottom while the gauge still reads full. Skids with separate nitrogen cylinders keep the agent tank unpressurized, removing the gauge seal as a leak path, though the fill cap and discharge valve still need checking.
Mixing agents is a different failure, unrelated to age. Monoammonium phosphate is slightly acidic and the bicarbonates alkaline; together in one vessel, even as residue from an earlier fill, they react, release CO2 and can build enough pressure to rupture a container. A system is recharged only with the agent it was listed with, and a tank that held something else gets a full clean-out first.
The NFPA 17 schedule: monthly, semi-annual and 12 years
NFPA 17 splits the work into inspection, a quick look by the owner, and maintenance, a thorough examination by trained personnel. The monthly inspection confirms the unit is in place and unobstructed, seals and tamper indicators intact, gauges in range, nozzles capped, no visible damage or corrosion. Semi-annual maintenance is where the agent is examined: the technician opens the container, checks for caking, lumps and moisture, and replaces the charge if it fails, since caked agent may not be broken up and reused. At the same visit the expellant cylinders are weighed or their pressure read, the hose blown clear, the nozzles cleared, and cartridges weighed against their stamped weight. Any discharge, even partial, triggers a full recharge and inspection wherever the system sits in its cycle.
The 12 year hydrostatic test applies to the agent container and the expellant cylinders. It is a pressure vessel requirement, not an agent one: agent comes out, the vessel is tested, dried and refilled fresh, so the charge gets replaced whether it needed it or not.

Portable and wheeled extinguishers run on a different clock
Nothing on a hand extinguisher expires either: a date of manufacture is stamped into the shell and the service history sits on the tag, but there is no expiry date. Portable and wheeled units follow NFPA 10 rather than NFPA 17: a monthly visual inspection, annual maintenance, an internal examination at six years on stored-pressure models, and a hydrostatic test of the shell at twelve. Cartridge-operated units skip the six year step, being opened at every annual maintenance anyway. Kept to that schedule, a rechargeable steel extinguisher often serves fifteen years or more. A disposable non-rechargeable comes out of service twelve years after manufacture, and a stored-pressure dry chemical extinguisher made before October 1984 comes out at its next six year maintenance or hydrostatic test, whatever its gauge reads.
Reading the agent: what a technician is looking for
Good agent pours like fine dry sand and shows no lumps when a handful is squeezed and released. Soft clumps that break under finger pressure are the first sign that moisture has gotten in. Hard lumps, a crust at the surface, or agent that holds the shape of the container mean it is done. Color is the second check: Purple K violet, sodium bicarbonate white, sometimes tinted blue, ABC pale yellow. A charge that has changed tone or shows streaking has been contaminated or mixed. A moisture test on a sample makes sense on a system holding a few thousand pounds; on a 350 lb skid the charge is replaced. The result goes on the service tag with the date and agent type, and that tag is what the AHJ and the insurer read.
